Monday June 1st, McPherson KS to Abilene KS, 62 miles
Today I saw the Kansas I had been expecting to see- large farms with lots of green, the most green I've seen since leaving Maryland over 3 weeks ago. We left east out of McPherson after an early morning shower and again picked up some unfavorable winds. However after 20 miles we gladly turned due North and benefited from a tail wind the rest of the ride- how nice! Additionally, a less traveled highway made for an even more enjoyable ride. The terrain is beginning to be more rolling. Along the way to Abilene we saw a number of wheat and cattle farms.
Abilene is a small quaint town- with a population around 6,000. It is best known for being the hometown of Dwight Eisenhower. We rode by the Eisenhower Home and Museum on our way into our hotel. Tomorrow is an off day and I intend to visit. The town is also historically known as a railroad "Cowtown" where cattle driven up by ranchers from Texas were then transported East by rail.
