Tuesday June 2nd, off day in Abilene KS
After nine straight riding days I was ready for an off day. I cleaned my bike and did my laundry yesterday afternoon so was free to explore Abilene today. A group of us shuttled this morning down to the Eisenhower Home and Museum. We spent over 2 hours there which I thoroughly enjoyed. There is a Museum, the modest original home, a library, a chapel/internment, and a visitor center all on a spacious well manicured lawn. Eisenhower, of course, lived a remarkable life. I was struck with how he was the right man at the right time to lead and unite the Allied forces in WWII. His unassuming temperament and consensus building style made him the ideal man to lead in a sea of very strong personalities .
Afterwards we walked around the small downtown and found a nice restaurant/bistro for lunch. We then walked the 1-2 miles back to the hotel and got to see some of the older well maintained Victorian homes up closer. We had dinner at a old farmhouse restaurant frequented by Ike and Mamie after he returned home after his presidency.

Dinner was at Mr. K's Farmhouse Restaurant (formerly Lena's) which Ike frequented. Pictured, the bottom of a chair he signed, "Ike sat here, 11/30/67". |
